Imagine being able to taste certain words, see sounds, and read colors. This is synesthesia, a neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. There are numerous forms of synesthesia in which any number of sensory pathways could cross and create unique experiences. So, in non-geek speak Jude Stewart describes, "It's a dreamy, harmless quirk arising from 'cross-talk' between tangled areas of the brain."
